The Finca Roja (Red building) , built in the 30’s, is a residential historic building located in one of the firsts expansion rings of Valencia city. The project designed by Henrique Viedma Vidal is a reference of valencian modernist architecture, and is a result of the eclectic architect’s attitude, influenced by the dutch expressionism in the building’s formal conception; in the art déco movement on its ornamental elements; and in the modern architecture racionalist principles.
These were the premises that set up the concept for this house renovation project, in which the new elements are generated through the essence and spirit of the building itself, in an effort to create a connection between the new and the existing.
The spaces were rationally relocated around two new linear walls, containing on its thickness the storage, infrastructure, and circulation needed for modern living. On the outside, these walls are covered with a new composition of noble materials inspired in the buildings colors and aesthetics, leaving the original apartment’s perimeter as a vernacular container that houses the new proposal.

Cerca del antiguo cauce del río Túria, en la ciudad de Valencia, un apartamento de los años 70, adquirido en su estado original, espera volver a la esencia de la década de su construcción. Bebiendo de referencias como Memphis y Archigram, el objetivo de esta rehabilitación fue diseñar los nuevos espacios con una visión vanguardista, generando un ambiente dinámico y acogedor.
La vivienda se reorganizó en dos zonas, la de día, diáfana, amplia y luminosa, y la de noche, compartimentada, acogedora, y privada. Ambas se unifican a través de una estética escénica y teatral donde el color y las texturas dialogan entre sí creando una unidad entre todas las estancias, sin que el uso específico de cada una importe.
La intervención ha logrado un equilibrio perfecto entre la preservación de elementos originales, como el suelo de terrazzo verde y la estructura de hormigón, y la introducción de un diseño contemporáneo, cumpliendo con el objetivo de crear un hogar tanto estético como funcional.
Near the former Túria river bed in Valencia city, an apartment from the 70’s seeks to return to the essence of its construction decade. Using references such as Memphis and Archigram, the aim of this renovation was transforming this apartment’s spaces with an avant-garde and colorful vision, generating wide, confortable and dynamic spaces.
The transformation was achieved by creating a careful balance between the preservation of some original elements, such as the green terrazzo floor and the concrete structure, and the introduction of contemporary design, meeting the goal of creating a home that is both functional and aesthetic.

In a suburban town located in the outskirts of Valencia, a young family acquired an existing semi- detached house that needed to be redesigned. The main goal of this renovation project was to reinvent the original house segmented dark compartments, and create new wide spaces provided with continuous flow and functionality.
In the ground floor the service and circulation areas are separated from the living spaces. The main rooms are organized around the living room, the center of this family’s life, symbolized with a “hug” created by the ceiling curved lines that falls dow towards the chimney, containing it, and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
The house’s surfaces are a contrast between linear storage walls covered in oak wood or painted in taupe, and large glass windows, connecting the interior with the exterior gardens, providing a timeless combination of luminosity and warmth.

Located in a 19th century building, next to the Torres de Quart in Valencia, this apartment emerges from its abandonment to add a new chapter of modernity to its own history. As a result of several unfortunate interventions, both on its interior and surroundings, the current apartment’s expression is marked by some architectural accidents, such as a concrete beam protruding from the neighboring building, or the exiting walls crooked angles. Therefore, we decided to start from these existences when approaching the assignment.
The proposal aimed to completely redefine the space with the aim of generating a new discourse within that chaotic world, highlighting its original construction elements, evidenced by the painted brick walls, and the wooden beam slabs with brick vaults, which, together with the existing architectural accidents, gives us a narrative that revisits the history of this home.
The new kitchen and bathroom volumes appear as fundamental pieces within a main open space, defined by their own materiality in wood and glass bricks, integrating different scenarios as one walks through the apartment, allowing communication between all the rooms and, at the same time, the democratization of the different spaces.
